The First Week Home
Bring your puppy straight to the animals it will guard, not into the house. Set up a small pen inside or beside the stock area โ somewhere the pup can see, hear, and smell the flock without being trampled by a ewe or pecked by a broody hen. This is where the bond gets made, and the first week sets the pattern for everything after.
- Pen the pup with or beside its stock from day one
- Feed in that same spot so it associates the animals with home
- Visit several times a day โ handle, check feet, look at teeth
- Expect crying the first two or three nights
- Don't bring it inside 'just for tonight' โ that habit is hard to undo
